Schedule – Workshops

Monday October 5th – Who are you as a leader?

  • Session 1 -10:00am – 10:50am Leadership Lessons from a Life in Athletics (Wellness and Senior Exist Strategy track)
    • Can leadership lessons learned on a playing field really apply to the “real” world? What are the keys to effective communication? How do you bounce back from failure? This workshop will hit briefly on many different leadership skills that can be applied to your every day life.
  • Session 2 – 11:00am – 11:50am Pop Goes the Leader: Lessons from Pop Culture (Emerging leader track)
    • This presentation will help leaders think critically about the media they’re consuming and how they can find leadership lessons in every day pop culture.
  • Session 3 – 12:00-12:50pm – What Motivates You? Discover Your Values (Emerging leader track)
    • No sure how to get involved and become a leader on campus? Attendees of this session will learn about values based leadership and how discovering your values can help guide your leadership journey.
  • Session 4 – 2:00-2:50pm – Believe the Hype: Self-Talk for Self-Leadership (Wellness track)
    • This workshop is geared towards thinking about the impact our own self-beliefs have on how we lead our lives. The discussion will move towards self-leadership and how we can build a life that’s in alignment with who we are and where we want to be.

Tuesday October 6th – Communication

  • Session 1 -10:00am – 10:50am – Who Said That? How to Communicate and Mediate Conflict (Emerging Leader track)
    • This presentation will teach participants how to alleviate communication issues and mediate conflicts. This will now be tailored for communication in the virtual space.
  • Session 2 – 11:00am – 11:50am – The 93% – Why Nonverbal Communication is Worth Your Time (Emerging Leader track)
    • Have you audited your nonverbal communication lately? When you speak with others, are you listening to all they are saying? Let’s talk about nonverbal communication and some tips to apply right now.
  • Session 3 – 12:00-12:50pm – Getting Comfortable with Speaking in Public (Wellness track)
    • Are you a little intimidated when asked to present or speak in front of people? There are some helpful tips and strategies you can use to make speaking in front of an audience easier.
  • Session 4 – 1:00pm – 1:50pm – Communication: Setting Boundaries
    • This workshop teach participants how to set boundaries in a professional setting. Many times we tend to prioritize our work over mental health and need to learn how to communicate when you need to take a step back.
  • Session 5 – 5:00-5:50pm – Real Talk: Communicating Effectively in a Leadership Role (Senior Exit Strategy)
    • Your communication as a leader establishes the tone for your organization or team. Learn about your natural communication style and how to adapt your style to meet the needs of your organization or team while establishing a culture of accountability and problem solving.

Wednesday October 7th – Career Readiness

  • Session 1 -10:00am – 10:50am – Networking in the Virtual World
    • Navigating through the last several months has been nothing but historical and unprecedented. The global COVID-19 pandemic has taught us how to be creative, flexible, and resilient. However, what does that mean when it comes to networking and marketing ourselves virtually? Join us as Consultant Robert A. Shutt offers insight on how to “shine thru”, especially via this climate of our new virtual reality.
  • Session 2 – 11:00am – 11:50am – Networking in the Virtual World (repeat session) (Emerging leaders track)
  • Session 3 – 12:00-12:50pm – Marketing your Student Leadership Skills (Senior Exit Strategy)
    • Students gain numerous transferable skills through their leadership experiences, yet they often underestimate the value of those experiences. All the hard work that is put into planning and facilitating meetings, events, working within an executive board, etc., is often poorly conveyed by just a few simple words on a resume. This workshop is meant to help students identify these “marketable” skills and give them the tools (and confidence) to articulate them effectively in person and on a resume/cover letter
  • Session 4 – 1:00pm – 1:50pm – 10 Things You Can Do Now To Support Your Career Success ((Senior Exit Strategy)
    • This workshop will share 10 things you can do now to help support your career success. These items are quick and can be done now, regardless of where you are in your career journey.
  • Session 4 – 1:00pm – 1:50pm – Networking in the Virtual World (repeat session)
  • Session 5 – 2:00pm – 2:50pm – Why does everyone else have their career goals figured out? (Wellness track)
    • The workshop will go through various factors and myths one comes across when starting their career path. We will look at what success means to each individual person, the pressures that are put on oneself when graduating, and the obstacles that life throws at you to force you to rediscover yourself and what makes you happy.
  • Session 6 – 5:00pm – 5:50pm – How to Translate Fraternity/Sorority Experience to the JobSearch (Senior Exit Strategy)
    • Regardless of what your major is or what career track you are about to embark on, translating your leadership experiences is a key part of the resume and interview process. This session will focus specifically on helping our fraternity and sorority leaders in navigating how to translate their experiences to relate to jobs they may apply for.
  • Session 7 – 6:00pm – 6:50pm – The Possibility of Surprise Panel: Unexpected Career (Senior Exit Strategy)
    • The global COVID-19 pandemic has taught us just how surprising, and unexpected, life can become. The possibility of the unexpected and constant change have been among the top lessons from this past year. How can you confidently navigate the forces in your career? How have TCNJ alumni approached the unexpected before? What career and professional lessons can you learn from them to guide your path forward today and in the future? Join us to get these answers, to gain advice, to network, and more.

Thursday – Adaptability and Resiliency

  • Session 1 -10:00am – 10:50am – Now What? Is Grad School the Answer? (Senior Exit Strategy)
    • If you’re considering graduate school, you might be wondering is now a good time? What else can I do if I’m not ready for a full-time job or, I’m not having luck with my job search? Join the Office of Career and Leadership Development to discuss graduate school considerations, timing, as well as what your other options might be if you’re wondering how to adapt and decide what are your options.
  • Session 2 – 11:00am – 11:50am – TCNJ’s Wellness Wheel: A workshop about important campus resources, resiliency, and wellness. (Wellness Track)
    • This workshop focuses on healthy living, resiliency, being your best self, and important campus resources. Topics and information covered in this workshop can help folks become more adaptive and able to recover from failure.
  • Session 3 – 12:00-12:50pm – Resiliency workshop: Failure is something we all experience (Wellness Track)
    • Resiliency is all about how to see failure as a positive learning experience and the capacity to bounce back. Come learn how to cultivate a belief in your ability to cope!
  • Session 4 – 1:00pm – 1:50pm – The Next Day: Strategies for Coping with Difficulties (Wellness Track)
    • This workshop will talk about the top strategies that students should use when encountering difficulties
  • Session 5 – 5:00pm – 5:50pm –  Accept (and Make Use of) Constructive Criticism (Emerging Leaders)
    • Constructive criticism and feedback are hard to take, but it is how we become better at whatever it is we’re doing. But how do we actually practice using feedback? Using feedback well takes practice, and this workshop will aim to teach students how to accept and apply constructive feedback in a healthy and positive way that opens the floor for growth potential.

Friday – Activism and Leadership

  • Session 1 -10:00am – 10:50am – Leadership in the Workplace: Insights from a TCNJ Alum (Senior Exit Strategy)
  • Session 2 – 11:00-11:50pm – Beyond the Borders of Social Media
  • Session 3 – 1:00pm – 1:50pm – No Time for Silence (Senior Exit Strategy)
    • Evaluating current activism and empowering students to become educated and vocal for change in our society.
  • Session 4 – 2:00pm – 2:50pm – Pretty Allied (For a White Guy) (Emerging leaders track)
    • This presentation will explore the ideas of allyship and advocacy for marginalized groups by members of more privileged identities.
